The whole intent of my writing it is to demystify the practice of automotive wiring in general. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve overheard people say that they hate wiring or that wiring is their least favorite part of a project. Since you’ve got this book in your hand, I’m sure you know exactly what I mean. I’ve never really understood why wiring has gotten such a bad rap—after all, it’s really quite simple. This book will show you how to professionally install a wide range of accessories, including stereo equipment. Over the years, I’ve learned the hard way how to do a job right the first time. Automotive wiring is not a topic to be taken lightly.
In fact, a simple mistake can cause a fire in your prized vehicle. You’d be surprised if you knew what I’ve seen under the dashes of the nicest of cars over the years. You’d be even more surprised at how simple it is to avoid these pitfalls altogether and do it right the first time.

Installing an aftermarket tachometer is a common upgrade for many vehicles. You will be shown how to wire it into the ignition system, install the ground wire, and make professional connections. So, why did you pick up this book to begin with? I mean, after all, automotive wiring is like calculus to most people! The answer is simple—you picked up this book because: You need help troubleshooting an electrical problem. You need help installing aftermarket electronics. You wanted to become the expert in this topic. Most importantly, you want to be able to do all of the above safely. Again, this book is intended to demystify the practice so it won’t read like a college-level physics book. After you’ve read it, you’ll be able to do all of the above and so much more!
To make the material easy to follow and learn, I’ve written the book so that each chapter provides you the knowledge needed to comprehend the following chapter. In addition, I’ve provided as many pictures and diagrams as I could, so that you can visualize my explanations. Finally, I’ve provided several step-by-step examples that you can do in your garage so that you can practice what you see in these pages.
Here’s a quick run down of my qualifications for writing a book of this nature. As of this writing, I’m 38 years old and have been a car guy since as long as I can remember. Early on, my talents leaned toward automotive electronics— stereo systems, auto security, etc. I began installing car stereo systems in my parent’s driveway at the age of 14, and by the time I graduated high school I was known as the “car stereo guy.” Early on in my career, I spent seven years installing automotive electronics of all kinds to earn a living. Many years later, I’m still involved with the car stereo industry. During my 20 years in the profession, I’ve been fortunate enough to work for two different manufacturers —Clifford Electronics and Rockford Fosgate.
And lastly, I’m a hot rodder! Throughout this book I use my three personal vehicles as references so I thought I’d acquaint you with them now: 2004 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Truck: Nothing special here, it’s just a daily driver with aftermarket audio and security systems. 2003 Ford Mustang GT: It’s loaded with go-fast goodies. It’s got a centrifugal supercharger with water/methanol injection, full exhaust, an opened-up intake tract, hot ignition, upgraded clutch, and a built 8.8 rear differential with 4.10 gears. A fully tweaked suspension allows it to handle great in the corners. Finally, it’s full of electronics of all sorts—3,000 watts of audio, a pair of 18- inch woofers, stealth radar detector, security, and a host of black boxes. 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass S: This one started life as a 1/8-mile race car. It was first purchased as a rolling chassis. It was already back halved, tubbed, had a roll cage, full fiberglass front clip, and excellent paint and bodywork.
I’m in the process of converting it to a street/strip car in full Pro Street theme. It now has a Roots supercharged 454-ci rat, TH400 with brake, and a narrowed 9- inch with a spool and 4.30s. Practical it ain’t, but there are few things cooler than the looks you get when driving this thing on the street! The myriad of wiring problems on this car inspired me to write this book. I work on it every chance I get. Somewhere in those three vehicles, and the thousands I’ve worked on in my past, I’m sure to find common ground with you. From vintage to current in-car electronics, this book covers a lot of ground.
